Through My Lens: Reflections

Over the past few posts in my Through My Lens series, I’ve shared a little about what happens behind the camera... the watching, the patience, the slowing down, and the philosophy behind fine art pet photography.

It may look calm and polished when you see the finished portrait.

But the truth is… dogs are wonderfully unpredictable.

There are proud poses and soulful gazes. There are perfect head tilts and quiet moments of connection.

And then there are the other moments.

The excited barking when they arrive. The curious sniffing of every corner of the studio. The sudden burst of energy that sends ears flying and tongues out.

Sometimes there’s slobber. Sometimes there are dramatic sighs. And sometimes there are kisses that land right on the camera lens.

And honestly, I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Because while I approach every session with an artist’s eye — thinking about light, composition, and detail — the heart of it is much simpler than that.

They are dogs and they are family.

They may bark too much. They may steal socks. They may give slobbery kisses and greet you like a freight train.

Those are the dogs we love.

And those are the portraits worth creating.

Fine art photography may focus on technical decisions, but at the end of the day, it’s still about them — the dogs who fill our lives with joy, laughter, and unforgettable moments.

That’s the heart behind every fine art pet portrait I create here in Memphis and the Mid-South.
